Grocery Games: Important Update

Long time, no see.  Not sure why I haven't been updating this blog of late... I've got tons of Cambodia stuff to blog about, but I am having some writer's block.  While I work on remedying that situation, please accept this very important update to my most recent Grocery Games post.

While perusing the snack shelves during a 7-11 beer run here in Bangkok, I spied this bag of Lay's below.  From what I can see, it is scallop flavored, thereby completing the anthology of sea-creature flavored chips available in Thailand (see also: lobster hot plate, hot chili squid, salmon):

Grocery games back in the hizzouse!

For some reason I thoroughly enjoy perusing the aisles of 7-11 for interesting local snacks.  While potato chips themselves are not exactly "local"- yep, they're Lays- some of the crazy flavors I've seen here are pretty unique to Thailand.

You've got your perennial favorites in the shellfish family, lobster hot plate and hot chili squid:

Not-so-standard BBQ flavors... Mexican BBQ?  In Thailand? Questionable. 

Extra BBQ?  Please explain what makes it "extra.":

More meat-flavored chips... meatballs of some sort and salmon?  Hmmmm.  Maybe it's wise they left the English off these.  But the spokes people certainly look jazzed:

 These flavors are pretty Thai... sweet basil (one of the three basil varieties here in Thailand, according to the folks at Silom cooking school):

And these two, with no English translation... one looks like a combination of dried shrimp, chili, lime and mayhaps squares of diced ginger?  The second one looks like Thai chili paste, delicious sweet and smokey stuff:

Grocery Games: Part 1

The first in a series in which I share interesting, disgusting and/or comical finds from the local grocery store.  Odd products, funny brand names, inappropriate mascots, mis-labels, etc.  Expect it all, limited only by what I can take a photo of without attracting too much attention from wary clerks.

A prime example of why you must look closely at everything you buy over here.  These are not your typical Lays.  Salt and vinegar pale in comparison.  Just wait 'till I nab a photo of the Cheetos flavors they have.  It's sacrilegious.
